The creative brief given to me for this project was to use a series of marks (created by using various, random objects and black acrylic paint) to create a final image of a word inspired by those marks.
Process
My first step for this project began with creating my marks. I used a variety of objects to create these marks, including the end of a pen, an eraser, and a rubber band.
After making these marks, I chose a couple of my favorites and developed a word that I felt was represented well by each one. The final two words I settled on using were torrent and lacerate. With these marks in mind, I then sketched a few different concepts for my final image.
After completing these sketches, I put a selection of my marks into photoshop, traced and isolated them, and then combined and arranged each mark in order to illustrate my chosen words.
For the word "Torrent," I wanted to create an image that looked like water, or a surging wave. To accomplish this, I used my marks to create large, bold letters that flow into and curl around one another.
For the word "lacerate," I went for a more simplistic representation of the word. I used Adobe Illustrator to warp my marks to make them longer and sharper in order to better represent my word. Because each mark is so straight and geometric, they fit well into the letters of the word. In the end, I used a combination of the marks combined with letters and played with negative space and various angles of the mark until I developed a clean, sharp composition that I believe represents the word "lacerate" well.
